Good Day Cici & Shaun,
I just found your website today, I am looking to learn the Indonesian Bahasa, and I came long your site. I have already found it very helpful. I am hoping to go to Jakarta to teach English. I was wondering if you have any thoughts about teaching English in Jakarta? Or do you have any suggestions in terms of places to get GREAT food, markets to go to, places that maybe are not so great. I am not the type to live in the malls, and just seek the museums and such. I am very excited to learn how to make certain foods, I made Nasi Goreng yesterday and it was so good! I look forward to buying it off the streets in Jakarta. Thank you for not only offering us assistance with langauge, but also fun pictures, blogs and a community.

Hi Shawn & Cici! I’ve juz found out ur website thru Google as I searched for any websites teaching Indonesian on the Internet currently. I’m very proud and highly appreciate ur efforts in promoting Indonesian language. The importance of Indonesian language seems in current time yet to be realised by Indonesians themselves.

I myself am an Indonesian. I am an architect by profession yet linguistics is my hobby. Off the work I deliver private German lessons to a number of local uni students.

Seeing the growing enthusiasm in this website, I would like to advise if it is possible for your website to be opened to public participation, such as by opening a forum where Indonesian afficionados or learners can exchange experiences, or providing a cultural section where everybody can contribute by writing about their experiences with Indonesia and its culture, seeing that no website with such feature is currently available on the net. I’m sure it will draw a lot of positive traffic.

Nevertheless, two thumbs up for you.

Shaun & CiCi, thanks so much for your site. My daughter, son-in-law, and baby granddaughter are moving to Indonesia this week. They will be learning Indonesian for the next year. This is a great way for me to get a little training so that when we visit them we know at least some of the language!

Thanks for your kind words! We will definitely consider doing that for the free lessons, but that is actually fairly advanced. We do story-based exercises in the premium program, but that has much more vocabulary and grammar, especially in the later lessons. It would be difficult to compose the whole story using beginner-level vocabulary, but we will certainly look into it!

Also, for everything we do, we have to write it from scratch and record it.. because we respect copyright laws, we must compose the story in our own words and record the result. Some of the stories you mentioned have public domain versions in English, but existing Indonesian translations would likely be copyrighted and so not available for us to use. I hope that makes sense.

I hope to have written correctly if not you may correct me. There is something that I would like to ask you. Could you record a short story on the free lessons, I hope not to be asking too much. I mean a short story that could help us out with the pronunciation of Indonesian. I think that would be of much help for the visitors and listeners of this fantastic site.

Maybe you might record one of these well-known short stories: the little red riding hood, cinderella, snow white or pinocchio.

Since you both the Indonesian language, you may know where to locate one of these stories. By the way, I don’t know if it is proper to ask you where I can get these stories aforementioned on the Internet. Maybe, you know about “Pangeran Kecil” or “Don Quixote” “Pangeran Kecil” is “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint Éxupery, you know the french author.

I hope not to disturb you with so much.

Thanks for your reply! Saya suka Sate Padang dan minta saya resep. Saya tinggal di Des Moines, IA. Kami punya rumah makan Indonesia di Ames. The restaurant is about 32 miles away so we do not go very often. The people that own the restaurant came from Jakarta and the wife’s parents still have a restaurant there. I have never been to Indonesia but would like to go there in the next couple of years. All the food I have tried I especially love the pedas makanan!!!
Thank you for the website. I have tried to learn Indonesian for two years but have struggled putting it all together. I know quite a bit of vocabulary words but have have trouble making the sentances. Your interactive premium lesson have really helped me!

Regarding Indonesian recipes, we will post a few recipes in the future blog.

Since (we) took the cooking class, we cook a lot of Indonesian food. Last week, we cooked barbequed fish and chicken satay. Really delicious!

@Peter (Belanda): Our cooking class is called Anika Cooking Class. Bumbu Bali cooking class is also very famous.

I am 74 and have been useing your lessons to try and learn a bit of Indonisian. I find your site the easyest and realy like it. Unfortunatly i have a difficulty as my brain wont absorb much at a time. But i am persevering .I am going to Bali and would to do a cooking class. I wish i knew witch one you did. Suami saya Jim Passmore menunjukkan blog ini kepada saya.Dia belajar bahasa Indonesia dengan kalian. Saya membantu dia dalam pelajarannya tapi membuat dia bingung karena saya orang batak, dia harus menyebut “Tulang” untuk paman dan “Inang” untuk ibu. Kami banyak tertawa ketika membahas kamar kecil untuk WC.

Melihat foto foto kalian di blog, saya teringat belajar membuat sambal ketika kursus di Casaluna, Ubud.Saya belum mempraktekkan resep masakan Bali karena tidak ada bahan bahannya. Kami tinggal di suatu kota kecil di Inggris dan tidak ada yang menjual tempe dan nangka muda.

I just got back from Bali myself and while I had hoped to take a cooking class (most likely at Laka Leke), I simply didn’t have time to. I would love to see some recipes, as my step mom and I are planning a Balinese feast for our friends and family back home in California.
