Thanks Shaun and Cici for a wonderful program. I am trying to learn by osmosis!! I am getting older and don;t learn as quickly as I used to. I downloaded the files to my mp3 player and can play/listen when I am working/relaxing, even before I go to sleep! I have been to bali many times but hope to go to the rest of Indonesia one day.

I just found your website today, I am looking to learn the Indonesian Bahasa, and I came long your site. I have already found it very helpful. I am hoping to go to Jakarta to teach English. I was wondering if you have any thoughts about teaching English in Jakarta? Or do you have any suggestions in terms of places to get GREAT food, markets to go to, places that maybe are not so great. I am not the type to live in the malls, and just seek the museums and such. I am very excited to learn how to make certain foods, I made Nasi Goreng yesterday and it was so good! I look forward to buying it off the streets in Jakarta. Thank you for not only offering us assistance with langauge, but also fun pictures, blogs and a community.

Hello, Thank you so much for this site. I love Bali and all things Indonesian. My best friend is a Dyak. Thanks to this course I may be able to converse with my friend and the locals I meet when I go on holiday, and its so nice to see the pleasure on their faces when I attempt to speak the language. Hi Shawn & Cici! I’ve juz found out ur website thru Google as I searched for any websites teaching Indonesian on the Internet currently. I’m very proud and highly appreciate ur efforts in promoting Indonesian language. The importance of Indonesian language seems in current time yet to be realised by Indonesians themselves.

I myself am an Indonesian. I am an architect by profession yet linguistics is my hobby. Off the work I deliver private German lessons to a number of local uni students.

Seeing the growing enthusiasm in this website, I would like to advise if it is possible for your website to be opened to public participation, such as by opening a forum where Indonesian afficionados or learners can exchange experiences, or providing a cultural section where everybody can contribute by writing about their experiences with Indonesia and its culture, seeing that no website with such feature is currently available on the net. I’m sure it will draw a lot of positive traffic.

Nevertheless, two thumbs up for you.

OMG! Es Campur is just like halo-halo here in the Philippines! Looks so delicious! I wonder what it taste like, since we don’t use santan (or gata in tagalog) instead we use evaporated milk. Must taste this one sometime!

G’day, My wife Coral and myself visit Bali often. So far this year we have spent 6 weeks in Bali. We love the food and always eat Indonesian food in Bali. My favourite is Ayam goring, done in a tomato and onion sauce. I love nasi goreng. I love the different ways it is made from different resturants. My wifes favourite is chicken satay. We both love black rice pudding

Thanks for your kind words! We will definitely consider doing that for the free lessons, but that is actually fairly advanced. We do story-based exercises in the premium program, but that has much more vocabulary and grammar, especially in the later lessons. It would be difficult to compose the whole story using beginner-level vocabulary, but we will certainly look into it!

Also, for everything we do, we have to write it from scratch and record it.. because we respect copyright laws, we must compose the story in our own words and record the result. Some of the stories you mentioned have public domain versions in English, but existing Indonesian translations would likely be copyrighted and so not available for us to use. I hope that makes sense.

I mean a short story that could help us out with the pronunciation of Indonesian. I think that would be of much help for the visitors and listeners of this fantastic site.

Maybe you might record one of these well-known short stories: the little red riding hood, cinderella, snow white or pinocchio.

Since you both the Indonesian language, you may know where to locate one of these stories. By the way, I don’t know if it is proper to ask you where I can get these stories aforementioned on the Internet. Maybe, you know about “Pangeran Kecil” or “Don Quixote” “Pangeran Kecil” is “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint Éxupery, you know the french author.

I have just returned from a trip to Bali and have downloaded your free lessons onto my ipod. I am really enjoying learning the basics of the language in the easy manner in which you present the lessons. I also printed out the pdf study guides too. When I am more proficient I shall definately look into the premium package as I am totally happy with the material.
Bali was a beautiful and friendly island but everyone spoke English!! I am looking to explore more islands on my next visit.

Cici, we actually have quite a few Indonesian restaurants in the area (Southern California). My favorite is a halal restaurant called Toko Rame. There is also a fast food place nearby called Warung Pojok — we went so often that we became friends with the owners. There is actually an Indonesian Food Court at Hong Kong Plaza (an Asian mini-mall) that has three or four different Indonesian places. Then there is the Duarte Inn. Every Saturday afternoon there’s a mini bazaar there in the parking lot with five or six different vendors serving food. They call that Pondok Kaki Lima. http://tinyurl.com/d458sd There are a few other Indonesian restaurants here as well but I’m not as familiar with them.

We also tried Warung Ibu Oka in Ubud. Really delicious! By the way, are there any Indonesian restaurants near where you live?

@ Joe:

Actually Shaun got sick from drinking iced drinks (which even though delicious, more likely not made with boiled water).
I would suggest that you wait at least 2 weeks (for your stomach to adjust to Indonesian food) before taking any ice.
Does anybody have experience on this? I didn’t have any problems at all

Oh, the first picture was taken in Tanah Lot in Bali. Have you been to Bali?

Es Campur sounds lovely but it sparks a question. What’s your opnion on taking ice in Indonesia? When you and Shaun spend time there it sounds like you don’t avoid it even though it’s unlikely to be made with boiled water. Have you had any problems?

Thanks for your reply! Saya suka Sate Padang dan minta saya resep. Saya tinggal di Des Moines, IA. Kami punya rumah makan Indonesia di Ames. The restaurant is about 32 miles away so we do not go very often. The people that own the restaurant came from Jakarta and the wife’s parents still have a restaurant there. I have never been to Indonesia but would like to go there in the next couple of years. All the food I have tried I especially love the pedas makanan!!!
Thank you for the website. I have tried to learn Indonesian for two years but have struggled putting it all together. I know quite a bit of vocabulary words but have have trouble making the sentances. Your interactive premium lesson have really helped me!

I really like Sate Babi if I can find an Indonesian restaurant that is not halal. I also really like Babi Guling which I ate at an excellent restaurant in Bali, Warung Ibu Oka, which was shown in that same episode of No Reservations.

I like Mie Ayam when I feel like noodles. I also like soto betawi and gado gado. Who am I kidding, I like almost every Indonesian food I have tried as long as it isn’t too spicy.

I went to a Padang restaurant in Jakarta which was interesting. A lot of the items were a little to spicy for me, but the presentation was good. I don’t think they could get away with serving food that way in the USA.

Hello! I found your Learning Indonesian website and blogs, while hunting for online Bahasa Indonesia lessons!

So far, one of my favorite foods is Gurame Bakar (the ikan bakar you described). I have tried Padang food, but it is so spicy! I love the taste of rendang (the beef cooked in that spicy sauce) but the spiciness is still hard to get used to. One thing I am begining to like is fresh sambal sauces, like at Ayam Bakar restaurants–I still do not like the bottled saus sambal :p

Regarding Indonesian recipes, we will post a few recipes in the future blog.

Since (we) took the cooking class, we cook a lot of Indonesian food. Last week, we cooked barbequed fish and chicken satay. Really delicious!

Dadar Gulung is my all time favorite dessert!
I pretty much like all Indonesian food. But I’ve only been to Java and Bali, so there’s probably a lot of delicious dishes I’ve never tasted.
I’ll definitely try to expand my knowledge on Indonesian food when I’m there in October.

Suami saya Jim Passmore menunjukkan blog ini kepada saya.Dia belajar bahasa Indonesia dengan kalian. Saya membantu dia dalam pelajarannya tapi membuat dia bingung karena saya orang batak, dia harus menyebut “Tulang” untuk paman dan “Inang” untuk ibu. Kami banyak tertawa ketika membahas kamar kecil untuk WC.

Melihat foto foto kalian di blog, saya teringat belajar membuat sambal ketika kursus di Casaluna, Ubud.Saya belum mempraktekkan resep masakan Bali karena tidak ada bahan bahannya. Kami tinggal di suatu kota kecil di Inggris dan tidak ada yang menjual tempe dan nangka muda.

I join the comment of Mike, after using your podcast for some time, indeed nice to see your faces.Being a permanent resident of Bali since 2 years,it took my cook 1 year to understand that also expats like pedas and not only mild expat food. I just got back from Bali myself and while I had hoped to take a cooking class (most likely at Laka Leke), I simply didn’t have time to. I would love to see some recipes, as my step mom and I are planning a Balinese feast for our friends and family back home in California. Thanks and thanks again for all of your wonderful — and SO useful — Bahasa Indonesia lessons. They served me exceptionally well in Bali.

Anyway it’s late at night where I am so I just wanted to say that I think the new look website is great. I’m also very pleased to see your photos since now I know what you look like. I bet you had a ball learning the Balinese cookery. In Sydney (Australia) we have many Indonesian restaurants so I really feel for you not having any.

Tentu! Resep apa? Kami masak banyak makanan! Cici akan menulis beberapa blog post tentang ini. Kami harus masak makanan indonesia sendiri karena tidak ada resturan indonesia di sini (di Boston).

Bagaimana dengan Ibu? bagaimana dengan yang lain?

Of course! What recipes? We make a lot of food! Cici will write some blog posts about it. We have to make Indonesian food ourselves because there aren’t any Indonesian restaurants here (in Boston).
