Dictionaries

A good dictionary is an absolute requirement for learning a new language. We have reviewed several and recommend the following:

The Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionaryby Alan M. Stevens - This dictionary is widely considered to be the best available, but is also relatively expensive. If you can afford the $50 or so for this hardcover dictionary, then it is well worth it.

The Tuttle Concise Indonesian Dictionary - This dictionary is a good value, but is considered to be less comprehensive. Though it may not be sufficient for the intermediate to advanced student, It is a good general resource.

Phrase Books

While we do not typically recommend phrase books, one stands out as a great resource for new learners. Instant Indonesian: How to Express 1,000 Different Ideas With Just 100 Key Words and Phrases is only about $7, but is well designed and focuses on some very useful phrases while hammering in the most important words. It’s small enough to fit in your back pocket and take anywhere, so you can practice a bit anywhere you go.
